Root Canal Therapy
Root Canal Therapy for Brookfield Patients
When you have badly decayed, infected or damaged teeth, root canal therapy is often used to restore and save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. While many people often cringe when they hear the words root canal, the procedure is actually very common and not as uncomfortable as people would imagine thanks to modern advances made in dental technology. The most common symptoms indicating you may need a root canal include pain upon biting or chewing, extreme sensitivity to hot or cold foods or drinks, noticeable discoloration of the tooth and/or swelling around the gum line of the tooth.
When Is a Root Canal Necessary?
When the nerve of your tooth has become infected or the pulp within your tooth has become decayed or damaged, a root canal is necessary to clean out the infected tooth and seal it. If you need a root canal, time is of the essence because an infection in one tooth can quickly spread to surrounding areas in your mouth, causing more severe problems and even more discomfort, if left untreated. Without root canal treatment, the infection in your tooth won’t go away and may lead to systemic problems in other parts of your body. It can also lead to a dental abscess, which can be excruciatingly painful.
How the Root Canal Procedure Works
Root canal therapy typically requires 1-3 visits to your dentist. During the first visit, our dentist will drill a tiny hole through the top of your tooth and into its inner chamber. The diseased or infected tissue will be removed, and the inner chamber will then be cleansed and disinfected and your canal will be reshaped. The cleansed chamber and canal will then be filled with an elastic material and medication designed to prevent further infection.
If necessary, the drilled hole will be temporarily filled until a permanent seal can be made using a dental crown. But don’t worry: an anesthetic will be administered prior to the procedure that will numb the tooth and the surrounding area, so you shouldn’t feel a thing.

Most patients who need to have a root canal done in our office experience little to no discomfort or pain and enjoy a restored tooth that can last almost as long as its healthy original. However, it’s not uncommon for some patients to experience sensitivity or tenderness for a few days after the procedure. Over-the-counter pain relievers or prescription medications should help alleviate this within a few days.
